Booting Windows 95 To The DOS Command Prompt

Here's a couple of undocumented features that Microsoft forgot to mention. It's a great way to boot your machine to the DOS Prompt.

BOOTING THE PC TO THE COMMAND PROMPT:
Create a file with Notepad. Do not type anything in the file, and save the file to the root directory of the C drive and call it WIN.BAT. When Windows 95 boots, and finds an empty WIN.BAT file, it will boot the PC to the DOS command prompt. To get to the graphical user interface from the command prompt, just type WIN and press enter.

RETURNING TO THE COMMAND PROMPT ON SHUT DOWN
If you booted your PC with the procedure in step 1 and then entered the graphical interface by typing WIN, when you select Shutdown from the Start menu, and the message across the screen says "It Is Now Safe To Shut Down Your Computer", type the following:

mode co80 [enter]

You will not be able to see what you are typing because the graphical screen is covering up your screen, but if you type it correctly, when you hit enter, you'll be returned to the C:> prompt.
